Mega is a cloud file storage system. Users are provided the protection of end to end encryption which decrypt data by the user’s client and not by the application. Files saved to a Mega account are accessible anywhere in the world. All the user needs is an internet connection and they can access and modify their files. Collaboration features are also included that let users create contacts to share files with real time updates. A Mega mobile app is available that lets users access their files through a smartphone or tablet. The Mega Sync Client provides simple automation between the user’s computer and their Mega cloud drive.Show more screenshots »
Overall, Mega has impressed its users. The application stresses the importance of security, and it really shows in the way it stores and manages user data. Many other attractive features have been praised, like the duplicate-free function which does not allow the user to store the same file on their server multiple times. Users also appreciated the lack of file size restrictions and helpful folder sharing features.
One of the reasons Mega stands out is its position on user privacy and security. The application maintains a zero knowledge policy which means file encryption is done prior to uploading so the data remains encrypted the entire time it is on the cloud. No data can be decrypted until it is downloaded to the user’s computer. That means even the application cannot access the user’s data in any way.
Mega maintains a clean, inviting interface that’s also unique. The red and black color scheme is visually appealing, but doesn’t hinder the user as they navigate. The menus are well organized and easy to access. Seasoned users and newcomers alike will have little trouble figuring out how to save and manage their files to their Mega cloud account.
New users can get started by clicking the red “Create Account” button found in the upper, right hand corner of the Mega homepage. The registration form on the next page asks for a first and last name, email address and password. After submitting the form, the user is advised that they must check their email inbox for a confirmation message.
Mega gives users four subscription options to choose from. The first is a free account which includes up to 50 GBs of storage and limited bandwidth. The first paid plan, labeled with the Roman numeral I, includes 500 GBs of storage space plus 12 TB of bandwidth for €9.99 per month. The II plan upgrades to 2 TB of storage space and 4 TB of bandwidth for €19.99 per month. The most expensive plan is the III which costs €29.99 per month and includes 4 TB of storage space and 8 TB of bandwidth.
Casual users may find Mega’s pricing to be a bit high, however the application does offer a free account with limitations. Users who are looking for a secure storage solution will really appreciate the effort Mega has put into ensuring data security. The application is even more appealing to smartphone users because of the availability of a mobile version.
